Startup in a box
I recently encountered a site offered by Microsoft, the Microsoft Startup Toolkit. Now, I found this page particularly intriguing due to the intrinsic nature of a startup itself — startups are supposed to be the result of a spark of ingenuity or entrepreneurship, right? The entire “this is a startup, and this is how you do it” concept is quite ironic, in my opinion. But before divulging further into that matter, let me debrief you on how Microsoft seems to be expanding its scope of products and services.
So, some emerging Microsoft products that come to mind might be Silverlight, Surface, or Origami. A browser plugin that acts as a Flash and media alternative (standards-based), a piece of integrated hardware/software that extends multi-touch to the user interface, and the (somewhat failed) original concept for what’s now known as either a mobile internet device or ultra mobile PC. Those are three Microsoft services that you’ve heard of. Probably.
Microsoft’s got a ton of other products that you may not have heard of as well. PhotoSynth? As described on the PhotoSynth about page:
Photosynth is an amazing new technology from Microsoft Live Labs that will change forever the way you think about digital photos.
Wonderful. That description tells us so much about what PhotoSynth is and why we should be excited about it. When I clicked the “Try the Tech Preview” link, I was greeted with:
Windows XP SP2 and Vista Only
The Photosynth technology preview runs only on Windows XP SP2 and Windows Vista.
Shoulda known better. I guess only Windows users get to have their minds changed forever about the way they think about digital photos. Okay, Windows-only products were acceptable at one point in the past, but the market is certainly diverse now to render this Windows-onlyness fairly unacceptable.
Anyway, I snooped around a little bit and discovered that PhotoSynth is from a set of products from Microsoft Live Labs. Take a quick look at that page and read the descriptions of some of the other products. They do sound fairly cool. And useful, I’ll have you know. But the chances of many of them being Windows-only are high, and my tolerance for non-cross-platform applications is fairly low. So let’s get back to startup in a box.
The Microsoft Startup Center site seems to be some sort of “Startups for Dummies” (which, thank goodness, doesn’t actually exist). My original point was that startups come from some supernatural spark of creative genius, not from instruction, coaching, lessons, or research. A successful startup business is the direct product of talent and entrepreneurship, not being told how to do something. In fact, at first place, this site looks like “undergraduate business school 1-2-3,” which totally just does not work for successful web businesses.
The site features everything you need to know about starting a startup; from “the rules” (the official type of organization your business will be registered as) to the “office setup” (the actual office space, as in tables, desks, and chairs). Other sections include, to name a few: your brand, marketing, finances, employees. Okay, is it just me, or are we missing the most crucial of them all? The product?
A common trend among newcomers to the field of entrepreneurship is an over-emphasized focus on the business-aspects of a firm itself and not what actually matters — the products and services that a company delivers. From a college student’s perspective, I see many of my peers being trained on how to run businesses, but not how to create the products and services that the businesses actually provide.
It’d be like having a throng of systems administrators, administering systems that do absolutely nothing. Sure, they may be darn good at keeping servers online, functional, and up-to-date; but the whole concept of a systems administrator is entirely worthless unless their systems are doing something productive.
We need less businessmen and more creators of products and services. If a product is good and successful, or, hell, if a product has the potential to be good and successful, bring the administrators marching in. But it’s my opinion that those administrators should never come first — a business is really no good without an innovative product.
While whoever designed and developed the Microsoft Startup Center site probably had an easy, enjoyable time (it’s fairly self-contained, which makes things fun for any designer), the page has no soul — it’s visually pleasing, yes, but I can’t see anybody actually ever using it as a legitimate resource for starting a company. Thus, it’s but a vehicle for selling the latest version of Microsoft Office, sigh.
Finally, the site has seem to have forgotten one crucial piece of advice to give to potential-startup-starters. Another tab must be added to the list. “All night booze-and-coding extravaganzas.”
